Unlike conventional candles that burn from a wick that runs up the centre of the candle, a Hopi ear candle is actually a cotton flax tube impregnated with beeswax honey and therapeutic oils, that is painlessly inserted into the ear to draw out impurities, relieve pressure in the head and sinuses and aid hearing problems. Ear candles are an ancient, mild, natural therapy and have been used by the Native Americans for many centuries.

There are some medical conditions that would make certain individuals unsuitable for treatment and those are listed under contra-indications, otherwise anyone of any age, providing they can lie still for 10-12 minutes at a time can be treated.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS ARE; (Anyone with these conditions will not be treated)

* Acute infection of the ear

* Grommets in the ear

* Perforated ear drum

* No eardrum

* Recent ear/nose/throat surgery - 6 weeks or less

* Acute mastoiditis

* Otto sclerosis

* Tumour of the ear

* Open wounds, cysts or boils in the ear

* Infected or inflamed ears

* Anyone on a course of antibiotics should wait until the course has finished

* After severe dental work e.g root canal fillings, removal of wisdom teeth,

if the face and jaw feel painful

* First three months of pregnancy (sage in the candle can cause miscarriage)

* Fever or feeling unwell

* Epilepsy (camphor in the candle can cause seizure)

* If a cochlear implant has been fitted or hearing aid is in place

* If mastoidectomy operation has taken place

* Inflamed outer ear due to eczema or psoriasis

* Under 16's without presence of a consenting adult

It is advised to eat a light meal before having the treatment as low blood sugar levels can be intensified by the treatment
